Algorand CEO’s Hacked Account Compromised

Key takeaways:

  • The Algorand Foundation requested that its users abstain from clicking links and replying to direct messages after revealing that its CEO’s account had been hijacked.
  • The attacker responded to the message with a parody of how Justin Sun, the founder of Tron, will take Algorand to new heights.

The Algorand Foundation requested that its users abstain from clicking links and replying to direct messages after revealing on X (previously Twitter) that its CEO Staci Warden’s account had been hijacked.

The fact that Warden’s X account shared a post on January 26 that used a well-known racial slur and called the Algorand community impoverished suggests that the account is not in Warden’s control. The hacker then advised the community to purchase Ether rather than Algorand.

The attacker responded to the message with a parody of how Justin Sun, the founder of Tron, will take Algorand to new heights.

According to the hacker, all they needed to do was provide Sun complete authority over Algorand and permit him to manufacture any token in exchange for True USD (TUSD). In writing, the hacker said:

“Of course, I accepted this offer immediately. Soon, Algorand will be pegged to VERY REAL USD and a new era of digital commerce will commence.”

The hacker also said in jest that Sun’s efforts will be the cause of the following significant cryptocurrency financial meltdown.

In addition, the hacker altered Warden’s bio and uploaded music to the account. They said the CEO had depleted six figures from the community and had tricked them into believing it was a hack. Along with altering Warden’s bio, the hacker made it appear as though Warden had already left the Algorand Foundation and was working as a “semi-professional pole dancer.”

Several community members replied to the Sun post, ostensibly amused by the hacker’s antics. In response to the message, one X user suggested that Algorand hire the exploiter, while another suggested that Algorand allow him to “keep the account.”

Others in the community, meanwhile, used this as an occasion to criticise Warden. ZachXBT, a crypto investigator, stated in a post that the hacker would make an excellent CEO for the Algorand Foundation. Warden is eligible for the internship at the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), whose X account was compromised on January 9, according to another X user.
