7 Best Bitcoin & Crypto Payment Processors for Merchants

Processing fees for crypto payments now range from 0% to 2% plus 25 cents, depending on which processor you pick and how much volume you push. That spread matters: on $50,000 of monthly sales, the gap between BTCPay Server (free) and BitPay’s entry tier (2% + 25¢) is over $1,000 a month.

The market also shifted this year. Coinbase Commerce, a default pick in most older guides, shuts down for merchants outside the US and Singapore on March 31, 2026. If you’re migrating off it, or picking a processor for the first time, here’s what actually works right now.

How We Review

We checked each processor’s published fee schedule in 2026, verified which regions it serves, and looked at custody model, settlement options, and e-commerce integrations. Fees quoted are the standard published rates; volume discounts are noted where they exist.

TL;DR: NOWPayments is the best all-rounder for most merchants (0.5% fee, 350+ coins, non-custodial). CoinGate suits businesses that want fiat settlement in EUR or USD. BTCPay Server is free and self-hosted if you can run your own infrastructure. Coinbase Commerce is shutting down; don’t build on it.

Try NOWPayments — 0.5% fees, no KYC to start →

1. NOWPayments: Best Overall

NOWPayments charges 0.5% per transaction in its base currency, or 1% if you want automatic conversion between coins. Volume discounts kick in above 50 BTC monthly turnover, dropping the fee to 0.45%, then 0.4% past 100 BTC.

The non-custodial setup is the real draw. Payments settle to a wallet you control, so the processor never holds your funds. It supports 350+ cryptocurrencies and plugs into WooCommerce, Shopify, Magento, and PrestaShop, plus invoicing, donation widgets, and a subscriptions API for recurring billing.

  • 0.5% base fee, volume discounts to 0.4%
  • Non-custodial: funds go straight to your wallet
  • 350+ coins, auto-conversion available
  • WooCommerce, Shopify, Magento plugins and an API
  • No KYC needed to start testing

2. CoinGate: Best for Fiat Settlement

CoinGate takes 1% per transaction and can pay you out in euros or dollars, which removes crypto price risk from your books entirely. A customer pays in Bitcoin; you receive EUR the next business day.

It handles 70+ cryptocurrencies, supports the Lightning Network, and ships plugins for the usual e-commerce platforms. The trade-off is custody: CoinGate processes funds through its own accounts before settlement, and fiat withdrawals carry their own bank fees depending on currency and volume. It’s registered in Lithuania and serves merchants across Europe and most of the world, though not the US market.

  • 1% processing fee
  • EUR and USD settlement to your bank
  • 70+ coins plus Lightning support
  • Shopify, WooCommerce, OpenCart plugins

3. BTCPay Server: Best Free & Self-Hosted Option

BTCPay Server costs nothing. It’s open-source software you run yourself, either on your own server or a one-click host, and there’s no processing fee because there’s no processor in the middle. Payments land directly in your wallet.

You get full self-custody, no KYC, Lightning support, a point-of-sale app, and plugins for WooCommerce and other carts. The cost is operational: you maintain the server, manage your own keys, and handle any coin conversion yourself. For a technical team that wants zero counterparty risk, nothing else comes close.

  • Free and open source, no processing fee
  • Full self-custody and privacy, no KYC
  • Bitcoin and Lightning native; altcoins via plugins
  • Requires hosting and some technical skill

4. BitPay: Best for US Enterprises

BitPay has processed crypto payments since 2011, longer than anyone else on this list, and counts AT&T and Newegg among its merchants. In 2026 it runs tiered pricing: 2% + 25¢ per transaction for merchants under $500,000 in monthly volume, 1.5% + 25¢ up to $1 million, and 1% + 25¢ above that.

That makes it the priciest option here for small shops. What you’re paying for is compliance depth, USD settlement to US bank accounts, and mature invoicing tools. Small merchants get better rates elsewhere; large US businesses that need a regulated counterparty are BitPay’s actual market.

  • Tiered fees: 2% + 25¢ down to 1% + 25¢ at $1M+/mo
  • Settlement in USD and 10+ fiat currencies
  • Strong compliance and enterprise tooling
  • Supports major coins only (BTC, ETH, stablecoins, ~15 total)

5. Binance Pay: Best Zero-Fee Option

Binance Pay charges merchants nothing for crypto-to-crypto payments. Customers pay from their Binance accounts or Binance Pay wallets, and funds arrive in your merchant account instantly.

The catch is the closed loop: it works best when your customers already use Binance, and your funds sit inside the Binance ecosystem until you move them. That’s fine for merchants in regions where Binance dominates retail crypto, and annoying everywhere else. Availability depends on your country’s regulatory status with Binance.

  • 0% merchant fee on crypto payments
  • 100+ supported assets, instant settlement
  • Customers need a Binance account
  • Not available in every jurisdiction

6. OpenNode: Best for Bitcoin-Only Businesses

OpenNode does one thing: Bitcoin, on-chain and Lightning, for a 1% fee. Lightning payments confirm in seconds and cost almost nothing in network fees, which makes OpenNode viable for small-ticket sales where on-chain confirmation times would kill the checkout.

It offers automatic conversion to USD and other fiat currencies at settlement, an API, payment buttons, and Shopify/WooCommerce integrations. If your business is Bitcoin-first by conviction or by customer base, it’s the cleanest hosted option.

  • 1% per transaction, Bitcoin only
  • Lightning Network native: instant, near-free payments
  • Automatic fiat conversion available
  • No altcoin support by design

7. CoinPayments: Widest Altcoin Support (Non-US)

CoinPayments supports roughly 2,000 cryptocurrencies at a 0.5% fee, the broadest coin coverage of any processor on this list. It’s been running since 2013 and remains popular with international merchants selling to altcoin-heavy audiences.

One hard restriction: CoinPayments left the US market in July 2022, citing AML regulations, and hasn’t returned. US-based merchants need to look at BitPay, NOWPayments, or BTCPay Server instead.

  • 0.5% fee, ~2,000 supported coins
  • Vault feature and built-in coin swaps
  • Not available to US merchants since 2022

What Happened to Coinbase Commerce?

Coinbase Commerce, long a default recommendation for crypto checkout, is being wound down. Merchants outside the US and Singapore lose access to the merchant portal on March 31, 2026, with no extensions offered. Coinbase is folding the product into its custodial Coinbase Business platform.

If you’re still on it: export your transaction history and withdraw funds before the deadline, then migrate. NOWPayments is the closest non-custodial replacement; CoinGate is the pick if you want fiat settlement instead.

5 Things to Check Before You Pick a Processor

  1. Region support. CoinPayments and CoinGate exclude US merchants; Binance Pay availability varies by country. Confirm yours before integrating.
  2. Custody model. Non-custodial (NOWPayments, BTCPay) means you hold the keys. Custodial means the processor holds funds until payout; check their payout schedule.
  3. Settlement currency. If your accounting runs in fiat, you want EUR/USD settlement (CoinGate, BitPay, OpenNode), not a wallet full of volatile coins. Crypto income is also taxable; see our crypto tax software guide for tracking tools.
  4. Real total cost. The headline fee isn’t the whole story. Add network fees, conversion spreads, and fiat withdrawal charges.
  5. Integration fit. Check for a maintained plugin for your exact cart version before committing. All seven here cover WooCommerce; Shopify support varies.

Expert Tip: Settle at least enough to fiat to cover the tax on each sale. Tax is owed on the crypto’s value when you receive it, so if the market drops before you convert, you can end up owing more than the coins are worth. Most processors let you set a fiat-conversion percentage per transaction.

What is the cheapest crypto payment processor?

BTCPay Server is free because you host it yourself. Among hosted services, NOWPayments and CoinPayments charge 0.5%, and Binance Pay charges 0% but requires customers to have Binance accounts.

What’s the difference between a crypto payment processor and a payment gateway?

In practice they’re the same product. “Gateway” describes the checkout interface that accepts the payment; “processor” describes the service converting and settling it. Every service on this list does both.

Can US merchants use any crypto payment processor?

No. CoinPayments exited the US in 2022 and CoinGate doesn’t serve US merchants. US businesses should choose BitPay, NOWPayments, OpenNode, or self-hosted BTCPay Server.

Is Coinbase Commerce still available?

It’s shutting down. Merchants outside the US and Singapore lose portal access on March 31, 2026, and Coinbase is migrating the product into its custodial Coinbase Business platform. Existing merchants should export records and withdraw funds before the deadline.

Do I pay taxes on crypto payments I accept?

Yes, in most jurisdictions crypto received for goods or services is taxable income at its value when received, and you may owe capital gains when you later convert it. Track every payment; accounting software built for crypto makes this much easier.

Which processor is best for small businesses?

NOWPayments fits most small merchants: 0.5% fees, no monthly cost, non-custodial settlement, and plugins for WooCommerce and Shopify. If you sell mainly to Bitcoin users, OpenNode’s Lightning support is worth the 1%.

Bottom Line: For most merchants, NOWPayments offers the best mix of low fees (0.5%), coin coverage, and self-custody. Pick CoinGate if you need EUR/USD bank settlement, BTCPay Server if you want free and fully sovereign, and BitPay if you’re a US enterprise that needs a regulated processor. Skip Coinbase Commerce; it’s closing.

Fee schedules verified against each provider’s published pricing in August 2026. Fees and regional availability change; confirm on the provider’s site before integrating.
