Key Takeaways:

  • TON blockchain experienced over 12 hours of downtime due to heavy load from the DOGS token minting
  • ย The close affiliation between TON and Telegram has drawn attention, especially following Telegram CEO Pavel Durov’s arrest in Franceย

The Open Network (TON), a blockchain network closely associated with Telegram, faced significant disruptions this week, leaving users and developers concerned about the network’s stability.

The outages, which occurred on August 27 and 28, prompted exchanges like Bybit and Binance to temporarily halt deposits and withdrawals, adding to the unease in the crypto community.

The first outage occurred on August 27, at approximately 11:00 pm UTC, and lasted for six hours, with the network finally coming back online around 5:30 am UTC the next day.

This was followed by a second outage on August 28, leading to more than 12 hours of downtime within a 36-hour period. Both incidents were traced back to the minting of the DOGS token, a new memecoin marketed as the “most Telegram-native memecoin.”

The heavy load caused by this tokenโ€™s launch overwhelmed the network, bringing block production to a halt.

These disruptions have raised questions about the TON blockchain’s capacity to handle large-scale transactions and its overall reliability.

The downtime not only interrupted the blockchainโ€™s functionality but also affected the trading value of the DOGS token, which remained below its initial levels before the legal issues surrounding Telegram’s CEO came to light.

Adding to the turmoil, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was recently arrested near Paris and indicted in a French court. The charges include enabling illicit transactions and child exploitation on the platform, failing to cooperate with law enforcement, and providing encryption services without proper controls.

While Telegram and TON are legally distinct entities, their close affiliation has intensified scrutiny, particularly in light of Durov’s legal challenges.

The recent outages on the TON blockchain, coupled with the legal troubles facing Telegramโ€™s CEO, have cast a shadow over the network’s future.

As the TON team works to stabilize the platform and address the technical issues exposed by the DOGS token launch, the crypto community will be closely watching how these developments unfold. The situation underscores the importance of robust infrastructure and legal compliance in the rapidly evolving world of blockchain technology.
