Coinbase rolls out Crypto Derivatives Trading in Canada

Share IT

Leading crypto exchange Coinbase has opened up crypto derivatives trading to qualified customers in Canada, allowing them to trade perpetual and dated futures contracts linked to Bitcoin, Ether, Solana and a range of other digital assets.

The new lineup gives eligible investors in the country access to a set of liquid, regulated instruments. According to the press statement, this includes 23 crypto futures products covering coins such as Bitcoin, ETH and SOL, along with five commodity futures tied to assets like gold and silver, plus index futures based on the COIN50.

These offerings run through Coinbase Financial Markets, an entity registered as a futures commission merchant with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission(CFTC). In Canada, the unit operates under exemptions granted to foreign dealers and futures commission merchants. The exchange described itself as the first major crypto-native platform to bring native crypto futures trading directly to the Canadian market.

Not every Canadian customer will qualify for the new products. Eligibility is restricted to individuals holding at least $5 million in net financial assets, as well as registered investment advisers and dealers. Traders using the platform can access leverage up to 10x, with positions structured in nano sizes.

Derivatives already play a significant role in how businesses manage financial exposure. Data from the Bank of Canada shows that a third of publicly listed non-financial corporations in the country actively rely on derivatives to hedge against earnings volatility.

The move comes just days after Webull, a US-based online brokerage, extended its crypto trading services to Canadian users.
