The Metaverse is the next big thing: social cyberspace where people like their digital avatars may work, hang out, and shop.

Nike, the athletic apparel and footwear company, is expanding its metaverse team and hiring for prominent positions as the latest word in the digital industry sparks hiring wars.

Nike has listed five job openings in the last week to help the firm integrate new workers for the metaverse or related functions into its Technology Innovation Office.

According to the job description, Nike is recruiting for a metaverse director to lead the development of the company’s fast end-to-end proof of ideas, prototypes, and production of Metaverse software and device solutions.

They work across Nike, bringing together business and technology dreams, supporting world-class products and innovation, and relentlessly delivering new capabilities to meet Nike’s long-term vision and goals. In addition, they are embedded in Nike’s Global Technology team.

As it moves into alternate-reality technology, Nike is searching for knowledgeable people with a wide range of metaverse technologies, from web3 to spatial web.

The new workers will join Nike at a time when the company’s goals are racing to establish itself in virtual worlds where people are expected to study, work, shop, and be delighted.

Nike launched its Nikeland experience to its Fifth Avenue shop in New York City after going into the virtual world of Roblox in November.

Nikeland was designed as part of Nike’s mission to “turn sport and play into a lifestyle.”

The world’s buildings and fields are modelled after Nike’s real-life headquarters and have vast arenas for the Roblox community to put their skills to the test in several mini-games.

Creators can use a tool kit to make their mini-games out of interactive sports materials.

The accelerometers on visitors’ mobile devices can transmit offline movement to online gaming. So they can, for example, move their gadget and body in real life to do in-game manoeuvres as long jumps and speed runs.

On the other hand, analysts have warned that the Metaverse is being overhyped, with corporations using the term to describe any project involving gaming, virtual reality, or NFTs.

Nike’s major competitor Adidas’ “Into the Metaverse” NFT collection, which clocked in at $23 million, was also introduced.

After purchasing RTFKT Studios, a company that creates NFTs and digital shoes for the metaverse, the shoe and clothing powerhouse announced that it was expanding into the digital Metaverse.
