On Tuesday, January 18, two major luxury carmakers, Mercedes and Lamborghini, revealed their plans for new non-fungible token use cases (NFTs). The Daimler AG brand intends to launch a Mercedes-Benz-branded NFT collection based on its G-class vehicle line. The announcement was made via the luxury carmaker’s official Twitter account. Mercedes-Benz has commissioned five artists to create one-of-a-kind designs inspired by the G-Class segment.

These artists are from various fields of art such as architecture, fashion, real estate, graphic design, and music. The idea is that each artist will interpret the NFTs from a unique perspective. For example, Antoni Tudisco, Roger Kilimanjaro, Charlotte Taylor, Anthony Authie, and Baugasm are artists.

Mercedes has partnered with Nifty Gateway, and these NFTs will be available next week, on January 23. Although this is Mercedes’ first foray into the world of NFTs, the company has been involved with blockchain for some time. For example, Mercedes has experimented with blockchain in the supply chain and tracking car emissions.

Another luxury brand, Lamborghini, announced an NFT collection on Tuesday, announcing five digital artworks accessible through the ownership of special physical keys. According to the press release, the artwork will be available through a whole project called the Lamborghini Space Key.

The press release said that the distinguishing element of the space-themed artwork is a piece of advanced carbon fibre composite material that can boast of an incredible journey: Lamborghini sent the sample to the International Space Station in 2019 as part of a joint research venture. After returning from space, the composite became part of the Space Key. This unique object is limited to five units, each of which is linked to an exclusive digital artwork by the same artist, accessible via the QR code found on the backside.

Lamborghini also stated that more information about the artists’ identities and the auction date for the collection will be released soon. In addition, Lamborghini will launch this collection in collaboration with NFT PRO. The NFT PRO provides enterprise NFT solutions that work with brands such as Sotheby’s, Adidas, and others. On the other hand, Mercedes and Lamborghini were not among the first automakers to experiment with NFTs.
